Oakland Plan Workshops

In May, the Oakland Plan project team hosted in-person tours and Zoom workshops focused on two important sites in the neighborhood depicted in the images below. Activities and materials from these events are now available as self-guided workshops for people to participate in over the month of June.

The workshops incorporate key findings from last fall’s online open house and subsequent monthly meetings of the four Action Teams (Community, Development, Mobility, and Infrastructure). The workshops allow you to be a part of envisioning how redevelopment on these sites might address needs for housing, jobs, community services, people-friendly streets, and park space in Oakland.

Virtual Open House

On Wednesday, May 26, the Oakland Plan team and Steering Committee hosted a Zoom open house to allow anyone interested in these sites to learn about the outcomes of the tours and workshops and provide additional input. The slides below presented at the event briefly cover both sites and input received from the two workshops. A recording of the Zoom open house will be posted shortly on this page.

Click on the large buttons above for each site to review site specific activities and materials including virtual site tours, redevelopment scenarios, polls, open house comments, and other engagement activities.

Input from the workshops will inform proposals in the plan for redevelopment at these sites and may also inform changes to Oakland's land use regulations in the Zoning Code. Some of the ideas may result in proposals for new transportation, housing, and parks projects.

These sites were chosen based on a number of unique conditions:

  • They represent areas where there has been significant interest and comments during the planning process, namely the Boulevard of the Allies and Forbes Avenue.
  • They include property owned by the City of Pittsburgh (Zulema Park, Pittsburgh Parking Authority Garage), the University of Pittsburgh, and UPMC. All three organizations are considering redevelopment and would like to hear from community members about their goals for redevelopment.
  • They allow us to look at a number of issues that have been raised in the planning process including improving open spaces, providing affordable housing, and what desirable new development would look like on Forbes Avenue and the Boulevard of the Allies.

The initial phase of input on these sites included in-person site tours and Zoom-based events including dedicated workshops for each site followed by an open house where outcomes from the workshop events were discussed. The dates below are included for reference. The only remaining event as a part of these events is the post-workshop open house. See above for details about that event.
