Overview

The City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility & Infrastructure is conducting a citywide State of Mobility & Safety Perception Survey to better understand how individuals who live and/or work in the city travel, how safe they feel using different transportation modes, and what improvements would most enhance mobility and safety across the city.

This effort will establish a data-driven baseline to inform policy, planning, and investment decisions. The information gathered in this survey will also support the city’s future transportation priorities and improve ongoing initiatives such as infrastructure maintenance, Complete Streets, traffic calming, and Vision Zero.

Key outcomes the city is hoping to achieve through this online survey are:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the experience of people who live/work in the city beyond traditional metrics (example- crash data, traffic counts), which will enable more responsive and effective policy and design decisions.
  • Provide an opportunity for residents to directly inform city priorities, improving trust and alignment with community needs.
  • Create a repeatable framework (every 3 years) to measure changes in public perception on various city initiatives and travel behaviors.

Who Should Take It
Anyone who lives or works in the city of Pittsburgh municipal boundary is encouraged to participate.

  • “Live” includes anyone who resides in the city—homeowners, renters, and students—even if only part of the year.
  • “Work” includes anyone whose job, school, or regular activity is based in City of Pittsburgh—whether full-time, part-time, remote, or occasional. If you commute in, visit frequently, or spend part of your week here, your experience matters.

Why This Matters
Traditional transportation data tells us what is happening—traffic volumes, speeds, and crashes. This survey captures what that data cannot: how people experience the system. For example, a sidewalk may exist on a map, but if it’s broken or obstructed, it may not feel safe or usable—especially for someone using a wheelchair or pushing a stroller.
