Program Description

The Civic Engagement Internship is designed to provide college-aged students with direct experience working in local government with a focus on civic engagement. The Civic Engagement Internship is currently available to actively enrolled students through the David C. Frederick Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh.

Students will participate in a general orientation that introduces the structure, functions, and key roles of City Government, with a focus on equity and inclusive practices

The program will provide direct pathways for students to engage in the day-to-day workings of city government. By participating with various departments, students will gain insight into public administration, policy development, and the complexities of municipal governance. This exposure aims to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, offering students a comprehensive understanding of local government functions.

A central goal of the partnership is to deepen students' knowledge and appreciation of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA), within the public sector. Through structured learning sessions, mentorship, and hands-on projects that tackle IDEA challenges, students will learn the importance of incorporating these principles into public service, preparing future leaders with the effective skills to address IDEA within their professional endeavors.

By fostering a strong connection between academic learning and community involvement, this internship aims to cultivate a lasting commitment to civic engagement and public service among students. Through volunteer opportunities, community-based projects, and engagement with local stakeholders, students will be encouraged to apply their skills and knowledge in meaningful ways that benefit the Pittsburgh community and prepare them for future careers. This aspect of the program is designed to instill a sense of civic responsibility and encourage students to become active, informed citizens who contribute positively to their communities.
