Program Description
Safety Town is an interactive educational program designed to teach children about pedestrian and traffic safety implemented as an activity combined with academic enrichment. Students cycle through a pre-designed, miniature village complete with streets, sidewalks, buildings, stop signs and a working traffic signal. Participants are also introduced to important people they may see along their route to school including crossing guards, bus drivers, police officers, firefighters, and people in the community.
Throughout the course, students apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios, helping guide them in making wise and safe decisions. This program is for students in kindergarten and going to 1st grade but must be 4 to 6 years of age. Each student receives a bike helmet and Safety Town certificate for completing the week-long safety program.
Safety Town started in the summer of 2023 as a pilot program at Pittsburgh Faison K-5 School.
