Terrace/Lothrop/Sutherland Intersection

10 March 2025

During the Fatal Crash Response Group site visit to Terrace and Darragh, The University of Pittsburgh shared plans for improvements to the Terrace/Lothrop/Sutherland intersection in order to reduce conflicts and confusion.

DOMI Contractors will begin installing these improvements on March 11th, 2025.

The existing configuration of the Terrace Street and Sutherland Drive/Lothrop Street intersection is confusing and disorienting. Conflicting approaches have different traffic controls which make it difficult for drivers to anticipate each other’s behaviors. As noted during field visits, some drivers approach this stretch of the corridor cautiously due to the confusing lay out while others speed through the intersection with little regard to the traffic control in an effort to remove themselves from the intersection as quickly as possible. These driver challenges, coupled with high pedestrian activity creates an unsafe intersection.

Planned revisions include:

  • Removing the Terrace Street crosswalk at Sutherland Drive
  • Relocating Terrace Street stop sign from Sutherland Street to Lothrop Street
  • Installing "ALL WAY" stop plaques at Terrace Street at Lothrop
  • Installing a "CROSS TRAFFIC DOES NOT STOP" plaque to Sutherland Drive stop sign at Terrace Street
  • Installing stop ahead warning sign in advance of relocated stop sign for southbound Terrace Street at Lothrop Street

Additional changes to Terrace include:

  • Updated pedestrian warning signage at Terrace Street mid-block crossing
  • Updated parking regulation signage for Terrace Street from Sutherland Drive to De Soto Street
