Vine St. Follow-Up

22 September 2025

Around 2:30am on August 16th, 2025 a driver appearing to turn left against one-way traffic on Fifth Avenue hit a pedestrian crossing Vine Street on the north side of Fifth Avenue. The pedestrian died from his injuries a few hours after being struck.

The initial investigation indicates that driving under the influence was a factor.

Our Vision Zero Fatal Crash Response Team, which included the Pittsburgh Police Collision Investigation Unit, has completed a site visit at Vine St.

Below are the Team's action items:

  • Reviewing the construction permits along Fifth Avenue to ensure safety compliance and visibility where equipment is placed.
  • Additional intersection improvements are expected through Pittsburgh Regional Transit's Bus Rapid Transit Project, with an estimated completion date of 2027.

Between 2019 and 2023, distracted and impaired driving played a role in 4000 crashes in Pittsburgh - 1 in every 5 crashes in the city. The consequences were devastating, with 22 fatal crashed resulting from distracted or impaired driving during that time.

This is at least the third fatal crash in 2025 where driving under the influence is a suspected factor.

Plan ahead, designate a non-drinking driver, take transit, or utilize ride-share.
