Project Overview

The Bloomfield Bridge, completed in 1986, is a key connector linking Pittsburgh's Bloomfield neighborhood with both downtown and Oakland. Noted for having the largest deck area of any bridge in the city, it spans over the East Busway and the railroad lines below, serving as an essential transportation route within Pittsburgh's urban network.

The project is currently in the planning process to address deterioration at the piers and deck. A maintenance project carried out in the fall of 2025 addressed severely deteriorated expansion joint seals. The planned work will focus on strengthening the bridge to improve safety, performance, and structural integrity by repairing the substructure, cleaning bearings, spot painting steel, applying a new overlay on the bridge deck and repairing concrete at the bridge approaches to improve the driving surface.
