In early July 2022, a motor vehicle accident damaged Freedom Corner, a historic landmark at the intersection of Centre Avenue and Crawford Street. The City is currently making plans to replace the broken granite and repair the structure of the monument, along with additional possible improvements, including seating, new planting and upgrade to the kiosk.
Freedom corner was designed by artist Carlos Peterson and architect Howard Graves, and was dedicated in 2001. Howard Graves, a Hill District native, visualized a monument overlooking the Civic Arena site and downtown, symbolizing the location where Hill residents drew a battle line against further urban renewal and demolition of several thousand homes and businesses.
