Background

The Department of Public Works (DPW), along with the input of residents and beneficial community partners, is designing the improvements to Leslie Park.

The park is located in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Leslie Park is a 6.02-acre site with recreational amenities including a playground, spray feature, basketball court, parking lot, baseball fields and a decommissioned pool/ pool house structure. The site also houses the Boys and Girls Club building, although the building is not part of the Scope of Work. A Conceptual Master Plan was developed by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy in 2015 and can be viewed here.

Please note: The Department of Public Works will be renovating the ball fields in-house. The fields will not be included in the Scope of Work outside of pedestrian connections and wall repairs.

Scope of Work* for the project includes the following:

  • Conversion of Pool/Pool House
    • Demolition of existing pool and pool house
    • Convert to usable community space
    • Evaluate feasibility of preserving an ‘architectural artifact’ from pool house as community has connection to building
  • Play Area Improvements
    • Renovate existing playground equipment and safety surfacing to integrate with spray features.
    • Evaluate site for best suited location for utilities, accessibility, etc.
  • Parking Lot Improvements
    • Consider entrance and access improvements
    • Repave and restripe parking lot
    • Consider options for optimizing accessibility
  • Park Pavilion and Restroom Building
    • Evaluate site for ideal location for facility
    • Include two family restrooms
    • Include shelter/picnic facility for playground/spray feature users
  • Sports Court Renovation
    1. Evaluate the relevancy of the basketball court with the consideration of potential upgrades or conversion to alternative programming
  • ADA Upgrades and Connections
    • Ensure site-wide accessibility and connectivity through pathways or switchbacks, as necessary
  • Lighting & Safety Improvements
    • Evaluate condition of existing site lighting and identify needs for proposed lighting per the newly improved park amenities outlined above
  • Stormwater Management
    • Stormwater BMP’s should be included to meet the City’s Stormwater Management Code (see General Responsibilities for more information)

*Note: Programming priorities listed above are intended as a general guide and shall be confirmed with the community through the engagement process.
