Project Description

The City of Pittsburgh, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is advancing the Maple Avenue Bridge Replacement Project. The project is currently in the Preliminary Engineering Phase.

Built in 1929 and rehabilitated in 1953, the bridge is located west of the Swindell Bridge in the Perry South neighborhood. The scope of work for the project is to replace the bridge's superstructure (beams and deck) while raising the vertical clearance over North Charles Street, repair the retaining walls, replace the sidewalks, and refurbish the ornamental railings. On Maple Avenue, new crash-worthy barriers will be added along the curblines of the structure.
