Project Description
The Sidewalk Repair Program was created to help property owners with the cost of repairing sidewalk to support a safer and better-connected sidewalk network. The City Code stipulates that adjacent property owners are responsible for care, maintenance, repair, and replacement of sidewalk and curb adjoining their property. The Sidewalk Repair Program addresses the realities that a safe and connected pedestrian network is essential to safe mobility, and that the costs of maintenance are prohibitive for many families. This program is designed to assist homeowners with their own sidewalk repairs, and requests to participate will not result in citation for damaged sidewalks.
Project Selection
Projects are chosen based on a number of factors including equity, pedestrian usage, transit access, safety, and community support. Selected areas will be notified through leaflets and mail. Requests for Sidewalk Repair Program assistance are not guaranteed to result in project selection.
Program Eligibility
All property owners are able to receive an up-to-five-year, interest-free payment plan. People who own and live in their home are also able to receive additional income-based discounts.
- Property owner will pay 25% of the cost of work if their income is 50% AMI or lower
- Property owner will pay 50% of the cost of work if their income is 50-80% AMI
- Property owner will pay 75% of the cost of work if their income is 80-120% AMI
- Property owner will pay 100% of the cost of work if their income is 120% AMI or higher
Project Execution
The City manages a contractor for the projects so that property owners can also save on contractor and permitting costs. This program exists alongside the Critical Sidewalk Gaps Program, which focuses on gaps in sidewalk network. The City's Department of Public Works also repairs and replaces City-owned sidewalks and those around City facilities.
