Critical Sidewalk Gaps Program Mission
The mission of this program is to develop safe, accessible pedestrian connections to essential community resources such as schools, transit stops, business districts, and parks. The Critical Sidewalk Gaps Program was founded in 2020 and is managed by the Department of Mobility and infrastructure (DOMI). The program frequently collaborates with the Safe Routes to School Program (also managed by DOMI) to directly address poor sidewalk infrastructure near schools. In 2023, Mayor Gainey’s administration worked with DOMI to establish the Sidewalk Repair Pilot Program, which aims to help property owners repair sidewalks by utilizing City contracts and subsidizing the cost to homeowners based on their income. The Sidewalk Repair Pilot has now been integrated with the Critical Sidewalk Gaps Program to simplify operations and better provide for the residents of Pittsburgh. These sidewalk project areas are chosen based on need and existing condition.
