Project Description

The purpose of the South Side Signals Project is to improve the safety of pedestrians & vehicles at six intersections in the South Sides Flats, Slopes, and Mount Oliver. Upgraded traffic infrastructure includes higher visibility signals with back plates, controllers, communication hardware, and detection using radar. Pedestrian accomodations include pedestiran countdown signals, audible push buttons, curb extensions, and ADA ramps. The project also includes new sidewalk at select locations, new pavement markings and signage, and upgraded streetlights.

Signal upgrades are planned for the following intersections:

  • 18th Street and Sara Street
  • 18th Street and Jane Street
  • 18th Street and Mission Street
  • 18th Street and Arlington Ave
  • Brownsville Road and Bausman Street

An additional signal will be added at:

  • 18th Street and Josephine Street

Construction Update

Project Schedule:

The Contractor is currently on schedule to finish the project in May 2023 and has approximately 22% of the work completed.

Work Completed:

  • The trenching for traffic signal conduit/cable has been installed at all 6 intersections.
  • A Temporary Traffic Signal has been activated at 18thSt/ Brownsville Rd/Arlington Ave
  • PWSA has relocated their fire hydrant at 18thSt/ Brownsville Rd/Arlington Ave

Current Work:

  • Sidewalk and curb ramp work at the following intersections:
    • 18th St/ Josephine St
    • 18th St/ Brownsville Rd/ Arlington Ave
    • Brownsville Rd/ Bausman Ave/ Amanda St/ Hays Ave
  • Traffic Pole Foundation work at multiple locations


  • No vehicular detours are anticipated for this project
  • Pedestrian detours have been implemented at multiple intersections within the project site
