Update June 2024

The City of Pittsburgh's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University have started construction on a small roadway repaving and restriping project along Morewood Avenue, between Fifth and Forbes Avenues.

This roadway restriping will include new bicycle sharrows (shared lane markings) and approximately 400 feet of dedicated bike lanes.

Signal changes were completed in October 2023.

Project Description

Carnegie Mellon, in collaboration with City Council District 8 and DOMI have completed an engineering traffic and safety analysis of the signalized intersection of Fifth Avenue and Morewood Avenue. This location has seen 37 crashes over a 5-year period, including 8 pedestrian crashes. This intersection is a major pedestrian access route between Shadyside and Oakland, Carnegie Mellon University, and Oakland Catholic High School, as well as, part of a major arterial corridor along Fifth Avenue.

This study issued several short-term recommendations to address safety concerns at this location. The following traffic control changes will be implemented in fall of 2023:

  • Prohibition of left turns from northbound Morewood Avenue onto westbound Fifth Avenue.
  • Prohibition of left turns from eastbound Fifth Avenue onto northbound Morewood Avenue.

Engineering analysis indicates resulting traffic congestion is expected to be minimal. The existing PRT bus routes that utilize this intersection will be unimpacted.
