A North Side Ensemble

The goal is to renovate the historic basketball court known as “The Jungle” in Allegheny Commons. In 2023, artist Janel Young (JY Originals), Pittsburgh-based creative agency Hounds, and nonprofit Swishh Dreams participated and won the nationwide contest Every Court Has a Story so the court could receive a full renovation including crack repair, patch fill, resurfacing, color coating, and new backboards and rims.

The importance of this court’s history and the importance of basketball as a community gathering has been shown through the abundant support in the Pittsburgh community. Initially, the project was titled "A Northside Solo," based off of our short film (below) and the similarities of basketball and jazz. With everyone’s support and contributions, this is now “A Northside Ensemble”. We will continue to celebrate our community, the history of Pittsburgh’s jazz scene, and the influence basketball has on bringing people together.

Public Meetings

Our engagement plan is to bring together the community of the North Side and surrounding Pittsburgh communities through this page, social media, and community gatherings and forums. This will help us decide on the court's design, plans for the opening ceremony, and continuous use of the court to benefit the community.
