Draft Plan Ready for Review!

The Draft of the West Pittsburgh Mobility Plan is available for review! After months of planning and community engagement the draft is here and is ready for review. The plan is available below.

Priority Projects

During the plan development process several projects emerged priority projects based on four key criteria.

  • Crash History
    • Project locations that have a history of crashes in the last five years and fall on the Countywide High Injury Network (HIN).
  • Proximity to Key Destinations
    • Project locations that are within 50 feet of key destinations. These destinations include schools, libraries, senior centers, parks, grocery stores, and other key locations for West Pittsburgh residents.
  • Transit Connection
    • Projects that are within ¼ mile of a transit stop and fall on a transit route.
  • Engagement
    • Project locations that were highlighted by the community during the engagement process.

These priority projects are detailed below.

Project Overview

West Pittsburgh encompasses a diverse tapestry of communities, including neighborhoods like Elliott, Esplen, Sheraden, and West End. While primarily residential, the area boasts a rich industrial heritage and a vibrant yet under-utilized commercial district. Notably, West Pittsburgh has long served as a transportation hub, particularly with the West End Busway, which remains a core strength and opportunity for the neighborhoods.

Despite convenient access to regional destinations including the North Shore, Downtown, and the airport corridor, a perception persists that West Pittsburgh is disconnected. Elevating community gateways and improving connections within neighborhoods, especially for public transit users and individuals who walk or use other mobility devices, will benefit the existing residents of West Pittsburgh and attract new individuals to the area.

Project Outcomes

As identified in the Racial & Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) by Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) & Centers for Disease Control (CDC), this mobility plan aims to focus on four prominent West Pittsburgh communities: West End, Esplen, Elliott & Sheraden. The plan aims to reduce health disparities and achieve health equity by promoting healthy living and active lifestyle within these communities.

The plan will address three key areas:

  • Pedestrian & Traffic Safety
  • Connectivity & Accessibility Improvement Among Neighborhoods
  • Community Placemaking & Wayfinding

Phase 1 Engagement Summary

In the last several months the project team has gathered feedback via the engage page, held two steering committee meetings, 6 community walkthroughs, and a listening session in an effort to gather feedback from the community. The key findings from the feedback we heard and the conditions we saw onsite generally fall into the categories listed below:
