Welcome!

Cultural and historic resources have a significant impact on Pittsburgh's character. They are valuable, non-replaceable assets that contribute to a unique and distinct sense of place. Pittsburgh's cultural heritage is the City's legacy, formed by its people, place, neighborhoods, buildings, landscapes, objects, and stories -- everything that helped to shape Pittsburgh, literally and figuratively, from the beginning.

The Department of City Planning's Historic Preservation Program is guided by PreservePGH, the Cultural Heritage Plan completed in 2012. The Plan proposed a number of ambitious goals, including establishing clear and consistent processes for nominating local Landmarks and Districts, the application and approvals of Certificate's of Appropriateness, and updated design guidelines.

These goals will be achieved through a combination of grant-funded projects and Department-led initiatives. Learn more through the links below.
