Program Overview

Cultural and historic resources have a significant impact on Pittsburgh's character. They are valuable, non-replaceable assets that contribute to a unique and distinct sense of place. Pittsburgh's cultural heritage is the City's legacy, formed by its people, neighborhoods, buildings, landscapes, objects, and stories -- everything that helped to shape Pittsburgh into the city it is today.

The Department of City Planning's Historic Preservation Program is guided by PreservePGH -- the Cultural Heritage Plan that was completed in 2012. The Plan proposed a number of ambitious goals, including establishing clear and consistent processes for nominating local landmarks and districts, the application and approvals of Certificate's of Appropriateness, and updated design guidelines.
